imageThis week I am seeking advice from the blogosphere. God knows wargaming has a bad reputation but sometimes, just sometimes, I wonder if it is because we are too tolerant. Now, tolerance is not normally associated with my good self but it is necessary in our hobby. If you are going to enter competitions you might find if compulsory to find a mechanism to calm yourself down.

imageI’m not talking about cheating here, just the personalities one meets and how you deal with them. This week we were playing ‘ The Wars of the Roses”, a boardgame that looked especially interesting.

Carpet Warehouse Games staff were their usual helpful and informative hosts.

Phil “El Gringo” and Uncle Ken were up for a first class game of medieval double dealing. The period is fascinating and the game board exquisite.

We were all ready for a great evening and then a fourth member joined us. As usual said fellow has done nothing in preparation and literally brings  nothing to the table. He did of course bring a never ending succession of gripes and criticisms. What do you do in such a situation? May I suggest a wargamers’ code?

Set Up. Sit down at a game if you are playing or interested

Get some. Don’t always rely on others to entertain you!.

Buy some- Try to avoid asking thousands of hypothetical questions, especially if we are all learning a new system. Buy the rules and read them!

Thank them- everyone has limited time, instead of criticising the scenario, the rules or the history, keep your comments positive.

Back to the forests of North America next Thursday so I need to get painting. Nearly rant over!

Next week Despertaferres discusses the issues that other blogs won't touch? Wargaming, does it include pixies and elves? Can you be a tough guy while playing toy soldiers? LARPing ( great fun or a bunch of txxxs?

Hmmm, now compared to other big event that night (cough election cough!) I thought our little game was great fun, a lot more civilised and with a better ending, well done Uncle Ken. I get what you mean about tolerance though, speaking personally I do have a reputation at our club for being “spikey” in that if I don’t like what people are saying/doing then I’ll kick off but whats the alternative? Another club member has a habit of demonstrating almost saint like tolerance towards any transgressors but even he can keep turning the other cheek for only so long which usually results in an eventual full on Hulk like transformation, shouty rant and later apology for his behaviour. Would it be better to be more forthright in our criticism of any bad behaviour, explain to the person involved that “hey, you’re being a pain in the a*** you’re spoiling it for everybody else and if you don’t desist then you can go and sit on the naughty step” or do we just go down the PC road of letting them carry on, not saying anything to their face in case we hurt their feelings but have a good old moan about them behind their backs?

    1. Hi Pal,
Funnily enough I was just saying to Ken, what annoyed me was that the game was a real winner. Thanks for introducing it and we must definitely play it again. I’m in two minds about how to deal with such characters. I do think it better that players tell offenders that they are not welcome until he “behave”. It’s a good job these comments are confidential………..😳
