“History is a pack of lies about events that never happened told by people who weren’t there!” Santayana

And in that spirit I present twelve questions to stretch your knowledge of ancient history!

1. Vesta, goddess of the hearth, defended Rome but what happened to the slothful virgin who let the fire go out?

2. In 18BC Augustus punished adultery harshly. What happened when his grand- daughter Julia had a baby to someone other than her husband?

3. How old was Emperor Tiberius when he died?

4. What does the nick-name “Caligula” translate as?

5. In which year did Rome first invade the British Isles?

6. How may have a feather been the murder weapon that finished off poor Claudius?

7. Which military advisor said, ” you defeat the enemy with a spade.”

8. Why did Nero kick his pregnant wife to death?

9. What colours were the racing factions at the Circus Maximus?

10. Who was the Roman god of “hinges”?

11. In which year was Pompeii destroyed by volcanic eruption?

  1. I’ll be honest and say I haven’t got a clue on any of them. It is tempting to google but only because I am truly facinated by the questions and intreagued by the answers. That said I will wait to see what they are when you post them. 😊

    1. I love history for the same reason! Some of it, you just couldn’t make up. I remember having a discussion with a History teacher who taught that Emperors would never enter the arena like in the film Gladiator. She’d never even heard of Commodus the hippo slayer, nor the fact that he killed one hundred bears in an afternoon!

      1. Amazihg. I’d never even heard of hippo’ being used before which I found incredible. Like you I love historical facts and knowing how some things came about and are still with us today. I became aware of this little gem the other day which you may or may not have been familiar with.

In the old west a .45 cartridge for a six-gun cost 12 cents, so did a glass of whiskey. If a cowhand was low on cash he would often give the bartender a cartridge in exchange for a drink. This became known as a “shot” of whiskey🤠

      2. Anecdotes like that are great – I never knew that one. You may have to write a Wildwest theme quiz for me!

  2. With out google it is a big fat zero answers for me… I do that there were riots between the rival Circus Maximus teams’ fans.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

    1. Damn it, I thought you’d be first to finish!
Hilariously there are accounts of racing faction hooligans strutting round like modern day soccer thugs- with furs and mullet hairstyles though instead of designer knitwear!
